Introduction of the Institute of Taiwan Studies

  The Institute of Taiwan Studies, CASS, established in September 1984 upon the ratification by the Secretariat of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, is a comprehensive academic institution and think tank focusing on studies on the Taiwan question and promoting the peaceful reunification of China. Its current president is Zhu Weidong.

  1. Research Fields

  Eyeing the strategic mission of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and facing profound changes unseen in a century, the Institute has been always following the CPC’s overall policy for resolving the Taiwan question in the new era, and focusing on studying key theoretical and practical issues toward Taiwan and concerning Taiwan. It undertakes research projects commissioned and entrusted by government departments, with focus on strategy and policy research. The main research areas consists of the CPC Central Committee’s principles and policies concerning Taiwan, the trends and prospects of cross-Straits relations, the situation of the Taiwan Straits and the impact of external factors, Taiwan’s politics, economy, society, law, culture, and external relations, and the theory and practice of national reunification.

  2. Organizational Structure

  The Institute consists of the General Research Department, Political and Economic Research Department, Law and Security Research Department, External Relations Research Department, Personages and Social Culture Research Department, General Office, Scientific Research Materials Department, as well as Editorial Department of Taiwan Studies, China Taiwan Studies (English), New Media Research Center, and Taiwan Social Situation and Public Opinion Research Center.

  3. Academic Journals

  The Institute publishes two academic journals: Taiwan Studies (bimonthly) and China Taiwan Studies (English quarterly). Both focus on authoritative and innovative research achievements concerning Taiwan studies.

  4. Academic Exchange

  The Institute is a key institution focusing on the studies of the Taiwan question in the Chinese Mainland, with decent reputation and far-reaching influence both at home and abroad. It has been committed to exchange and dialogue with prestigious universities and think tanks in the Taiwan region and other parts of the world. The annual events it organizes such as the Cross-Straits Think Tank Forum and Cross-Straits Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum have become major platforms for cross-Straits academic exchange.
